Recent conference/journal publications

My recent accepted international conference and journal publications

Jimmy A. Lee, K.-C Yow, and I. Kumazawa: A Robust Image Retrieval System for Mobile Guide Applications. In International Journal of Intelligent Systems (IJIS), pages unknown, 2012.
Abstract:
We describe the prototype of an image retrieval system used for mobile guide applications. It allows users to send image queries of urban scenes using camera phones. The system uses a database of views of scenes to determine the poses of query views provided by the users. Information are then mapped onto the query views. Our approach is based on a fully affine invariant descriptor, coined PRIUS, which can identify corresponding building facades across widely separated views despite the highly repetitive nature of the man-made environments. The system is substantiated by experiments which show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches such as SIFT and MSER in image retrieval.

Y. Li, A. Guo, Jimmy A. Lee, Y. Gao and Y.-L. Ling: Visual Interactive and Location Activated Mobile Learning. In Proceedings of the 7th IEEE International Conference on Wireless, Mobile, and Ubiquitous Technologies in Education (WMUTE), pages unknown, Takamatsu, Kagawa, Japan, March 2012.
Abstract:
In this paper we proposed an application on smart phones for interactive mobile learning. Image recognition technology is used to link physical objects seen through the camera to relevant virtual knowledge. Through the built-in camera on the smart phone, visual interactive learning can be realized. With the GPS sensor, location activated learning is also possible. Combining both the camera and the GPS sensor on the phone, multimedia contents can either be activated by snapping a picture from a real world object or entering a predefined geographical area. This makes the learning process more interesting and intuitive. A web portal is developed for teachers to create the learning trails for different learning objectives. The mobile apps are also developed for iOS and Android platforms. A trial was conducted with school teachers and students and positive feedbacks are obtained.
